Art Stolen by the Nazis During WWII
This tour will combine a walk through Paris, evoking the Nazi occupation from the beginning of the invasion in 1940 to how the lives of the Jewish collectors, gallerists and art dealers were systematically plundered and destroyed by the Nazis. We will begin our tour in the 8th district with a visit to the Plaque commemorating one of Paris' most illustrious galleries owned by Paul Roseburg, friend and long-time collaborator with the Modernist artists, including Picasso. Then we will stroll through the 8th, past the Madeleine Church, which famously was a favorite of the Nazis and whose Mayo were stolen and taken to Berlin in 1941. From there we will head down the fashionable Rue Saint Honouré and discuss the works of famed fashion designer, anti-semite and collaborator Coco Channel, and how her active persecution of her Jewish designers is going to lead to the expulsion of many talented designers and artists, before arriving at the Place Vendome where the Franco-American Jewish art dealer and resistor René Gimpel had his gallery until his family was forced to flee to the south in 1940. We will also discuss his family's battle to recover their art from French state institutions. Afterwards a short stroll will take us to the Tuilerie gardens where we will see the Jeu de Paume museum where the heroic Rose Vallard, at immense risk to her life, helped to save over 15,000 paintings from the Nazi's clutches. Finally we will head to the Louvre for a specific visit of the rooms where the museum stores over 700 pieces of recovered art which have not been claimed by their respective owners after the war. This will cover paintings from Dutch Masters to Medieval icons to 18th century French masterpieces, however the art changes regularly so at this point I cannot be specific on which painting will be on display at that time. If the clients wish, we can walk through the Louvre to end with the Mona Lisa, and discuss the bravery of the conservationists and in particular Van Kempfe who held to save the painting from Carl Oberg in 1940.

Rose Valland and the Art Stolen by Hitler (Louvre only)
During World War II, the Nazis took art mostly from Jewish galleries and homes — all destined for Hitler’s Museum. Rose Valland worked in the office where the art was gathered. She had the unique ability to remember everything. She documented details regarding each piece of art in journals that helped the Monuments Men uncover thousands of pieces of art and return them to their rightful owners. Today, there are still more than 1700 pieces in the Louvre that are waiting to be returned. During your private tour, you will trace the steps of Rose Valland from the Jardin des Tuileries to the Louvre, where Jacques Jaujard orchestrated the evacuation of the art ahead of the Nazi plunder and provided a spot to “store” it so he could keep an eye on it.

You will have a tour of the permanent collection, following how artistic, technological and cultural developments in the mid-19th century were going to pave the way for the rejection of the previously dominant academic style, and a movement towards more independent and unique artistic styles upheld by the group later collectively known as the Impressionists.
Full-Day Monet and Impressionism Tour
Musee d'Orsay
We will begin at the Musée d'Orsay for a 2-hour tour of the permanent collection, following how artistic, technological and cultural developments in the mid-19th century were going to pave the way for the rejection of the previously dominant academic style, and a movement towards more independent and unique artistic styles upheld by the group later collectively known as the Impressionists. This will include analysis of how France's shifting political systems from Empire to Monarchy to Republic back to Empire and final Republic interspersed with Revolutions is going to also be a breeding ground for artistic dissension amongst France's professional artists. We will discuss the notion of Race, as this is important within the context of France as a colonial and rapidly industrializing country. This is not to make clients uncomfortable but to highlight that European artistic context cannot simply be viewed through an American lens, which is often the case today. With regards to the Impressionists, we will see a selection of Degas, Cezanne and Monet from before 1870, and contrast them with the works that they created post-1874 to see whether the concept of "Impressionism" actually changed the artists styles or whether Impressionism was never an accurate unifying style and more an adopted name for publicity, or as can be argued, an insult to these artists. We will see paintings by the following Delecroix, Bouguereau, Millet, Courbet, Manet, Monet, Degas, Renoir, Caillebotte, Cezanne, Morisot, Cassat.
Orangerie
From there we will walk (15 mins) to the Orangerie museum. In the Orangerie, we will explore the 8 great canvases which constitute Monet's ultimate donation to the state, honored, as per his will, 1 year after his death. We will explore the notions of mortality, tranquility and humanity that Monet imbues into these works, as well as discussing Monet's physical condition and personal life were the limitations on this Swan Song. (The collection of the Orangerie also includes the private and personally curated collection of Walter Guillaume which we can visit if the clients wish. This focuses on the modernists of the early 1900s though there is some incongruous Renoir pictures, bought and added by his wife, and the expense of the soul of the original collection. There are paintings from Picasso's pink period, Matisse, Modigliani, Laurant and Utrillo in this part, though it is more focused on the Montmartrois and the early modernists for whom Guillaune worked as a patron, dealer and often times, muse.
Marmottan Museum
This museum is unique in the world and constitutes the single largest collection of Monet's water lilies, predominantly those dates towards the end of his life in the 1920's, though there are also 5 rare portraits of his sons, particularly Michael. This collection is divided into these chronological sections 1865-1879, 1880-1911, 1919-1924. And we can see clearly how Monet's style and thematics develop, particularly before and after the death of his wife. The museum also houses a selection of works by Berthe Morisot-Manet, who was a friend of the family, and whose daughter, Julie, wanted to have a definitive location to show her mother's works, as in her own lifetime she sold very little due to the constraints on female artists and social convention. As a lover and muse of Eduard Manet, as well as later on his sister-in-law, Morisot's work shows a fine skill and heavy influence from the men in her life, but also a desire for self expression and emphasis on the women's sphere. Also she is one of the rare female impressionists who was able to partially break the masculine hold over the art world at the time, a feat only achievable due to the revolutionary nature of the impressionist movement.

Private Tour of Giverny
There are two parts in Claude Monet's garden: a flower garden in front of the house and a Japanese-inspired water garden on the other side of the road. Monet did not like constrained gardens. He planted flowers according to their colors and let them grow freely. He developed a passion for botany, exchanging plants with friends and was always was looking for rare varieties. While family members took care of the house and garden after his death, the property was neglected following WWII. It wasn’t until 30 years later that a curator and gardener decided to bring back the garden as Monet once had it. It took almost 10 years to restore the garden and the house their former state
Private Tour of Marmottan Museum of Monet
The Marmottan Museum Monet collection is located in the magnificent townhouse, once owned by Paul Marmottan, with its perfectly preserved Empire-style decor.
